Quarterfinals: Upsets Rule the Day in Round 1
After a successful Hollywood premier on Friday night,
Underdog starred in a Saturday encore during round one
of Gowanus Height Softball League playoffs. The
Brooklyn Bums were
the only higher seed to advance, taking two games from
the Brooklyn Knights
in the 4/5 game. 6th seeded Assault also swept
their way to the semifinals by beating the defending
champion Veterans,
who had been the 3rd seed. SDK,
which entered the post season as the 7th seed, also had
the brooms out in full force by taking two from 2nd seed
Mayhem. Still, the
biggest upset of the weekend came at Marine Park as the
8th seed Bums edged
out the top seed Marlins
in three closely contested games, including a nail
biting 2-1 pitcher’s duel in the deciding contest.

Bums Win 2007 Summer Championship
The Brooklyn Bums
captured the 2007 GHSL Summer crown by taking two of
three from SDK in
the championship series. In game 1, SDK jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead in the first inning and then tacked on 6
runs in the later innings. SDK’s offense was led by
John Bonomolo, Mike Gary and Juice. On the
mound, Rob Miller was in command, keeping the
Bums at bay for most of the game enroot to an 8-3
victory. In game 2, the Bums quickly rebounded from
defeat by scoring 4 first inning runs, highlighted by
the clutch hitting of Sabu. SDK chipped away at
the lead with a run in the 2nd inning and then loaded
the bases with no outs in the 4th. Joey Attard
came on in relief and wiggled out of the jam with only
one run scoring. After escaping the threat, the Bums
exploded on offense and eventually cruised to a 14-3
victory. In game 3, the Bums once again got off to a
quick start by scoring 4 runs, with Kiki, Caballo,
Sabu and Ed Santiago leading the way. With
the early lead, the Bums’ bats were once again off to
the races. As Joey continued to pitch a gem, the Bums
built up an 11-1 advantage. SDK battled to the last out,
but the Bums held on for an 11-3 victory that clinched
the championship. The MVP of the series was
